The Laid-Off Lawyer
If you’ve been laid off by your law firm…well, we’re sorry. We’re also very familiar with the situation, and there are several steps you can take to find a new job:
Update your resume and cover letter: Make sure your resume and cover letter are up to date and tailored to the specific job you are applying for. We’ve got samples/guides to both. We’ll also help by providing a mark-up of your current resume.
Network.
Reach out to your professional network and let them know you are looking for a new job. Attend networking events, join professional organizations, and use social media platforms like LinkedIn to connect with other professionals in your industry.
Apply to job postings.
Law firms websites are your best bet, followed by LinkedIn. A skilled recruiter is also a particularly valuable asset at this stage (see below).
Consider using a legal recruiter.
A legal recruiter can help you find job openings that match your qualifications and experience, and can help you prepare for interviews.
Be open to different opportunities.
Depending on your interests and compensation needs, consider biglaw firms, government agencies, non-profit organizations, and in-house counsel positions.
Be persistent.
Finding a new job can take time and effort, so don't get discouraged if you don't find something right away. Keep applying and networking until you find the right opportunity for you. One caveat: while we’re big believers in persistence, it is not in your best interest to pester the same HR departments/firm recruiting contacts/hiring partners unnecessarily. On the other hand, a legal recruiter’s job is to be at your disposal, at your convenience.
